What is Profile Sync?
Profile Sync is the Upwex action that pulls your live Upwork profile into your Upwex workspace in a single click. It reads the same data Upwork shows on your public profile - title, overview, skills, work history, hourly rate, and category - and stores it as the freelancer context that every AI feature reads from. Once your profile is synced, the AI Cover Letter Generator, Check Fit, and Auto-Bidding no longer guess who you are. They write and score against your actual positioning instead of a generic freelancer template.
How Profile Sync works
Profile Sync lives inside the Upwex Chrome extension. When you open your own Upwork profile page while logged in, the extension reads the page's NUXT data - the structured JSON Upwork already renders into the page - and sends it as raw payload to the Upwex backend. There is no scraping of rendered HTML and no copy-paste. You click Sync Profile, the extension confirms, and the data appears under your profile card in the Upwex dashboard within a few seconds.
What gets synced:
- Profile title and professional overview
- Skill tags Upwork has on file for you
- Hourly rate and availability
- Job category and specialization
- Work history snapshot used for tone and proof points
Once stored, this profile becomes the freelancer-side input for every AI call. When you generate a cover letter, the AI reads the job post on one side and your synced profile on the other, then writes something that actually sounds like you. When Check Fit scores a job, it compares the job's requirements against your synced skills, not against a profile you typed into a settings form months ago.
If you update your Upwork profile - new skill, new rate, new portfolio piece - the Upwex copy does not change until you re-sync. Re-syncing is the same one click, and it overwrites the stored snapshot with the current Upwork state.
Example
You spend a weekend rewriting your Upwork overview to lean harder into Shopify work and drop your old WordPress framing. Monday morning you open Upwex and generate a cover letter for a Shopify Plus migration job. The draft still mentions WordPress in the second paragraph. That is the old snapshot talking. You click Sync Profile from the extension, wait a few seconds, and regenerate the cover letter. This time the draft opens with your Shopify Plus positioning, references the rate you just raised, and skips WordPress entirely. The job post did not change. Your profile did, and the AI just caught up.
Why Profile Sync matters for freelancers
AI output is only as accurate as the inputs it gets. Without a synced profile, a cover letter generator either writes in a generic voice or asks you to paste your bio into a textbox every time. Both options waste time and produce drafts that sound off-brand.
Profile Sync solves that once. You sync, and the AI has a stable picture of who you are until you change something worth re-syncing. The match score becomes meaningful because it is comparing the job to your real skill list. The cover letter sounds like you because the model has your actual overview as context. Auto-Bidding picks jobs that fit your category instead of jobs that fit a guess.
It also keeps your positioning consistent across every Upwex feature. The same profile feeds the cover letter, the fit check, the red-flag scan, and the CRM record. You are not maintaining one bio in Upwork, another in Upwex settings, and a third in a saved template file.
Profile Sync vs Upwork's own profile data
Upwork already stores your profile - that is where Profile Sync reads from. The reason Upwex keeps its own copy is access and stability. The Upwex backend cannot reach into your Upwork account on demand, and Upwork does not push profile changes to third-party tools. So Upwex holds a snapshot, and you decide when to refresh it. If you rewrite your overview or change your rate on Upwork, re-run Profile Sync to bring the new version into Upwex.
Frequently asked
How often should I re-sync my profile?
Re-sync whenever you change something on your Upwork profile that the AI should know about - a new skill, an updated overview, a different hourly rate, or a new specialization. If your profile has been stable, there is no reason to re-sync.
Does Profile Sync change anything on my Upwork account?
No. Profile Sync only reads from Upwork. It pulls your existing profile data into Upwex and does not edit, post, or modify anything on the Upwork side.
What data does Profile Sync actually pull?
Your profile title, overview, skills, hourly rate, availability, category, and a snapshot of your work history. This is the same information visible on your public Upwork profile.
Do I need to sync my profile before generating cover letters?
Yes. Without a synced profile, the AI Cover Letter Generator has no freelancer-side context and will produce a generic draft. One sync is enough to feed every AI feature in Upwex.
Where do I run Profile Sync?
From the Upwex Chrome extension while you are on your own Upwork profile page and logged in. The Sync Profile button reads the page and sends it to your Upwex workspace.
